NATURE'S OUT THERE. JOIN THE PARTY.
Penn Outdoors exists to provide Penn community members with the resources, equipment, transportation and contacts they need to enjoy the outdoors. We do this through a full schedule of Penn Outdoors trips and events, our LISTSERV and blog and the occasional happy hour.

We recently sent out a newsletter to our alumni, and Fredrick H. Zal responded with words of encouragement. His letter is presented below, in its entirety.
--------------------------------------
Thank
you for the newsletter.
I was the President of the University of Pennsylvania Outdoors Club back in
1991-1992. [Of course, we called it the 'Outing' Club, which has a
different meaning today.]
The adventures that we had still resonate with me today, and a large reason why
I live in close proximity to Oregon's mountains + ocean. [Especially one
spelunking trip, that always makes me happy to not be 'Injun Joe'.] We
never went hang-gliding, but it is something that could have change our lives
profoundly, so I am happy that current UPOC'ers are so cavalier.
I am also still active in the Sierra Club, and recently proposed a "Living
Building" that should exceed LEED Platinum, 1 Planet Living, Architecture
2030, Energy Star, and ICLEI Star Community environmental practices for
construction while inspiring a vibrant neighborhood in Portland, Oregon.

This weekend I am interviewing three potential freshman students. I know
that if they are accepted for enrollment, that the UPOC will help them stay
connected to the planet in meaningful and inspirational ways.
If UPOC members are heading to Oregon, let me know, and I would gladly give
them some great outdoor recommendations. [Please bike cross-country, and
minimize your impact upon the environment.]
Ciao,
Fredrick H. Zal
